Fire baskets or "dog" baskets were traditionally used to burn solid fuels and would have sat alone in an open style chimney breast. They comprise of a free standing fire grate supported by 2 or more cast iron legs. The term "dogs" is used for the supports or legs for the basket and are normally quite ornately cast.
